Three Months

Three Months

Eight Note

Verse One

There’s a overwhelming sadness that he feels inside,
There’s a haunting fear that just won’t subside,
He’s got three short months of his life to live,
He’s got three short months of his life to give,
But he sits and watches as the days go by,
He sits and wonders and he questions why,
When no-one’s looking he starts to cry,
Cos he wants to leave with dignity and style.

Verse Two

He looks back to his childhood years,
To the friends he knew and he loved so dear,
He’s got three short months then it’s time to go,
Had a lifetime of promises but nothing much to show,
And he sits and watches as his life slips by,
He sits and ponders and he wonders why,
When no-one’s looking, he starts to cry,
Cos he wants to leave with dignity and style.

Chorus

And he cries,
Why is life so unfair,
When I leave this universe,
Will anybody care?
And he grieves,
For the years gone by,
He’s was so afraid of living,
Now he’s so afraid to die.

Bridge

Cos every breath he takes is just one less before he dies,
And the loneliness he feels and the lonely tears he cries,
There’s no time for tomorrow, so he just lives for today.
Cos he wants to leave with dignity and style.

Verse Three

He would put off till tomorrow, what he should have done today,
Now there are no more tomorrows, so he lives for yesterday,
He’s got three short months of his life to live,
He’s got a lifetime of promises and nothing more to give.
So he sits and watches as the days go by,
He sits and wonders and he questions why,
When no-one’s looking, he starts to cry,
Cos he wants to leave with dignity and style.

About the Song

This song was actually written back in September 2002. Inspired by the fabulous song 'I Grieve' by Peter Gabriel on his 'Up' album, this is a tragic example of how art often imitates life. Ten years later, my best friend Patrick developed a bad cough that was misdiagnosed for months. I remember being in Peru and hearing the news that he actually had advanced lung cancer even though he did not smoke. In three months, he was gone. His old school friends flew out from Montreal and we would sit in his hospital room drinking fine wine and brandy and trying to make the best of a terrible situation. Life can be very, very cruel and truly tests the conviction that many people have that there is a 'God' especially when you see how much suffering there is in the world. I did not want to 'overwork' this song musically so it is quite sparse. For me, it is the words that matter the most. Not an easy song to sing or record because even six years later, it still feels like only yesterday that this all happened.
